There are five lakes in the area.  Serene Lake is developed with paved roads, cabins, and park services including boating and swimming.  The other lakes are pristene and are a wonderful reward for an easy hike.  Kidd Lake is the first lake past Serene Lake and serves as a reservoir.  Beyond Kidd Lake is Cascade Lake, both are relatively large.  Behind Kidd Lake are Long Lake (photos) and Palisade Lake.

The Serene Lakes are behind the Soda Springs and Royal Gorge ski areas on old Route 40.  So, take Route 89 North toward Truckee and get on I-80 West toward Sacramento.  Take the Soda Springs turn off and cross over I-80 toward Soda Springs and Norden.  Turn right into the Soda Springs parking lot and cross the railroad tracks.  Take a right on Kidd Lakes Road.  The road will deteriorate to uneven dirt.  Park near Kidd lake and find the trail near the lake.

Distance & Difficulty

This is a short, easy, mostly level hike.  It's not very far, but it's stunningly beautiful.  The hard part is riding in the car over the rocky road.
